Interview with Alim Shabazz

How and when did you start training?
I started training for competitive fitness shows (i.e., bodybuilding and most recently men’s physique) since 2003. I have always been in athletic shape through playing various sports in high school and college.
What is your favorite quote?
“Luck is when opportunity meets preparation”, Vince Lombardi
What top 3 tips would you give to someone looking to get six pack abs?
Keep your sugar under 15 grams per day, keep your sugar under 15 grams per day, keep your sugar under 15 grams per day!
In general do you have difficulty gaining muscle, losing fat or are you a genetic freak that we all love to hate?
Because I believe in balance and keeping my exogenous sugar intake to < 15g/day. I believe that my body has found its homeostasis and by eating balanced whole foods (with the occasional burger or chocolate treat) I find that staying “lean” with a good balance of muscle to fat is very manageable.
What foods do you keep in your fridge?
Eggs, milk, juice, diet 7-Up, butter, strawberries, Ezekiel bread, cheese, vegetables, poultry and meats.
What is your favorite cheat meal?
I love a good cheeseburger.
How do you manage to stay motivated?
My children and wife. I train (believe it or not) not to compete in fitness shows, but to be “all in” and healthy for my wife and kids. I try to set a good example and stay in shape so I am not the dad on the sideline or couch.
What is your greatest fitness achievement?
Saving a life while in high school. My cousin and I pulled a downed motorcyclist from the 805 freeway in San Diego who was lying in the road when we came upon him late at night.
What are your future goals?
I would like to earn my IFBB Pro card in the Men’s Physique division. This will potentially increase my credibility in my fitness endeavors.
What philosophy do you live by?
Balance.

How many days a week do you train and what is your routine? (split, exercises, sets, rep range, etc.…)
I train 6 days a week using “Tactical to Practical”, it is a self-developed system that brings together multiple disciples and methods (i.e., plyometrics, isometrics, calisthenics, core, HIIT, kettle bells, TRX, etc.). I would like to give credit to my training buddies, Bryan, Duane and James who continue to challenge and motivate me.
What is your diet when trying to get in peak condition? (Sample day diet, macro nutrient goals, tips, techniques, etc.…)
Low sugar, low saturated fat, balanced meals
I also use Green Tea Hawaii to support weight loss and overall health. (http://www.gogreenteahawaii.com/)
What supplement do you take?
I use supplement from USP Labs which include Jack3d, Yok3d, OxyELITE Pro, PRIME, PowerFULL, SuperCissus, Pink Magic, Anabolic-Pump and Modern BCAA.
How do you deal with cravings?
Drink more water
What are the top 3 mistakes most people make when trying to get six pack abs?
Too much sugar intake, too much sugar intake, too much sugar intake
Have you been featured in print or electronic media and if so what media? (Magazines, Other Sites, Commercials)
I have been in Muscle and Fitness to demonstrate deltoid exercises and various websites.
